Expirence Overview
- Contributed to the end-to-end design and development of a custom web application used globally by thousands of researchers to manage participation in the SmallSat Conference, the world’s largest small satellite research event.
- Architected and implemented 80–90% of the backend and frontend code during the initial development phase using TypeScript, Vue.js, Nuxt.js, Express.js, and PostgreSQL.
- In the second phase, served as project manager and sole designer, defining requirements with stakeholders and users, producing detailed Figma mockups, and conducting usability testing to validate workflows.
- Directed a team of full-stack engineers, ensuring timely delivery of new features within scope and budget, while maintaining a high standard of code quality and user experience.
- Designed and implemented support for abstract submissions, peer review, scoring, and presentation scheduling, enabling efficient, scalable administration of 3,000+ annual participants.
- Deployed and maintained the platform using Docker, and managed development workflows via Jira and Bitbucket to support agile project delivery.
- Delivered a secure, scalable, and user-friendly solution that replaced fragmented tools with a centralized, streamlined system for global academic and professional collaboration.
My Role
This project was completed in two phases. In the first phase, I performed the lead full-stack development role, architecting the system and building out about 80-90% of the backend and frontend code. In the second phase, I was the project manager and sole designer. I collaborated with the primary stakeholders and users of the application to define requirements, produce Figma mock-ups, do usability testing, and then led a team of full-stack engineers to build out the features within a deadline and on budget.
Problem
Managing a conference is no small task, especially one that has over 3,000 participants each year. The SmallSat Conference is the largest Small Satellite research conference globally and brings in researchers and professionals from around the world. Efficiently selecting who will be presenting fairly and with minimal overhead requires a tool tailored for the job. My team was contracted by the conference to build and maintain an application to support this effort.
