Expirence Overview

Together with my wife, built from scratch an ecommerce store that sells high ticket fitness equiptment from various top industry brands. Collaborated and built a branding package and a custom site design using a shopify template as a base. Created ad campaigns, worked with suppliers, and interacted with customers through email and phone.

My Role

I am the primary designer for the e-commerce site. I also work with our suppliers to ensure we are selling high-quality products and building good business relationships. I design and build new pages and collaborate with my wife on branding, marketing materials, and other business materials to maintain a consistent message and focus. My wife runs the business day to day.

Process

1

Market Research and Niche Selection

My wife and I began our e-commerce journey by selecting the niche in which we wanted to sell products. We did a lot of market research as to which niches had potential to be profitable and competitive based on market saturation of existing sites and supplier availability. We also wanted to build something we were both passionate about. We’re both athletes, so the fitness and Pilates space just made sense for us—it’s something we’re passionate about, and we saw it as a great market to dive into.

2

Branding

Once we decided on a niche, we needed to build a branding package. My wife and I are both trained designers, so it was fun to collaborate on this together. We settled on the name "Reformer Pro" and created a logo with a color palette to base our website and all of our marketing materials off of.

Design and Iteration

With our logo and color palette in hand, I set off to build a high-quality website to showcase our products. I looked at many different sites to get inspiration and noted things I liked and did not like. Once I had a good idea of what I wanted the site to look and feel like, I found a Shopify template as a base and did a major overhaul of the code to make it fit our branding and my vision for the site.

Supplier Outreach / Onboarding

Now that we had a high-quality website and branding package, we were able to start reaching out to potential suppliers. This process was new for me because I haven't had to do a lot of sales in my career, but it was a great learning experience. Over the course of about a week, I called many suppliers and emailed those I couldn't get hold of. I was able to sign on a few, load their products onto our site, and all of a sudden, we had a legitimate e-commerce store with products to purchase. Now we just needed to get some customers!

5

Marketing

With my SEO and Google Ads knowledge and my wife's social media marketing knowledge, we were ready to start our first marketing campaign. I spent a lot of time optimizing our site for SEO and working with Google to set up our ads account. My wife built our site's social media profiles, and together we started to draw in customers through both organic and paid traffic.

Continued Growth

We have continued to grow our site by launching new marketing campaigns and integrating with different payment method providers to make the buying process easier for customers. We have optimized our site for customer service and have helped customers find and purchase the equipment they need to live a healthier life. We have experienced steady growth, and it has been fun to do this project together with my wife to highlight each of our strengths.
